International Women’s Day: Celebrating Dolly Parton

My woman this year to bring to your attention may surprise you. It shouldn’t, but there is a really good reason I have chosen her this year, which I will get to later.

Firstly this incredible lady has the sunniest disposition of any human I know of. Her whole soul just emanates light and positivity and that in itself is a rare quality that needs to be celebrated. But Dolly Parton is much more than just a happy beacon in a sea of misery.

I apologise now if I get any of the following facts wrong, I am working from memory and what has struck me over the years about this wonderful woman. So please don’t be offended if I get muddled, this is a personal ode to Ms Parton.

Dolly Parton, born 19 January 1946. At age 74 she is still touring, putting out new records and acting in movies. I am not going to insult her by saying she doesn’t look her age, because what does 74 look like anyway?

She grew up one of 12 children, she was the 4th. They were not a wealthy family at all, in fact, her father worked long and hard to provide for his family and they all lived in a small one-bedroom cabin with no luxuries at all. What I love about Dolly though is that she didn’t see herself as poor as a kid, because they were always rich in love. Listen to her song ‘coat of many colours’, it is somewhat…
