When I was a kid my mother told me I was fat. She said I was too short, too fat and too ugly to ever be a model. Bearing in mind that I was about 8 years old at this point, so even if I did have puppy fat, that wasn’t going to stick around long.

OK, let me rewind.

We were on holiday in our caravan that was situated in a park at Brean Sands. For those of you that don’t know where that is, it is close to some more famous attractions such as Wookey Hole caves, Cheddar Gorge and Weston-Super-Mare, oh and not far from Bristol too. For all you non-Brits reading this, you’re welcome, these names must be making you chuckle.

Brean is one of those seaside towns where there isn’t much to do except walk along the beach. The beach is fabulous though, there is a shipwreck at one end and a big cliff to climb at the other. I may be exaggerating with the term ‘shipwreck’, I think it is more of a rotten carcass of a boat, but as a kid, it was a shipwreck from the days that pirates ruled the sea.

The beautiful sandy beach gave way to thick gloopy sludge when the tide was out. My brother’s and I would often attempt to walk to the little islands that got left behind when the sea left the shore. But sadly, knee deep in grey sludge, we could never quite get there. But it was always fun to…
